I have started to qualify my remarks when people ask questions about classes of fire extinguishers lately, because I learned not long ago that what is considered the class C, for example in Europe and the United Kingdom is not what is considered a Class C in the United Kingdom the United States.

United States, the Class C fires (and fire extinguishers provided for the class C) refer to fires involving electricity. In Europe, the class C refers to fires involving flammable gases.

A fire extinguisher suitable for electrical fire do not use water or be water-based, such as foam. Instead, it will be a dry chemical powder, or a gaseous agent such as CO2 or halogenated agent who not conduct electricity.

A fire involving a flammable gas is often difficult to extinguish and the most technical fight against fires require an attempt to stop the flow of gas wherever it is coming from. High-speed dry chemical extinguishers are probably your best choice here for extinction. (See link to photo ... very cool stuff!)

All extinguishing agents can be harmful to the eyes, chemical or otherwise. We must take care not to aim the extinguisher in a case that does not contibute to the exhibition. Although sprinklers may have antifreeze in them! (Not something you want in your eyes.)

For more information on fire extinguishers work, different types and classifications of fire (at least in the U.S.) visit the link for information on fire extinguishers. It is a very good site.
