Explosive Gas Detector

Posted on October 23, 2010.
Explosive Gas DetectorCan truck exhaust to the outside off a carbon monoxide and explosive gas detector insidea

My alarm went off one morning. Firefighters found nothing, but there was a truck idling in the lot next to my apartment. When the truck pulled the alarm has ceased, but firefighters told me it would not have done. He suggested that if I spray perfume, which may have caused, but that sounded a little ridiculous to me.

I definitely suggest it was the truck exhaust.

Although there is nothing explosive in the exhaust gases, carbon monoxide could have triggered it.

Alarm systems are known (at least in the fire service) sensitive - and take very little leave. I have been to alarms triggered by steam bathroom, kettle, moist air (I'm not kidding - the moist air can trigger them), even someone blowing cigarette smoke in an apparatus conditioning.

I suggest that it is probably carbon monoxide trucks deactivate it - also the fact that many modern detectors are wired so that they do not take the smoke, but often the other byproducts of a fire (such as carbon monoxide).

WHAT KIND OF PERFUME DO YOU USEaa Just kidding. Did you have a window opena A truck untuned could deliver one ton of CO, it would not be much to trigger the alarm. I say it was the truck, probably a 20 yr old chev or GM. Ever get behind one of thesea They will whet your eyes.

If the truck was idling near a fresh air intake, it would certainly have triggered the alarm. I saw this happen in institutional buildings (including hospitals). The fresh air intake is positioned near the loading docks, without considering the idling of vehicles, the air intake captures the exhaust and it focuses on the building. It only takes about 5 parts per million of carbon monoxide in the air from most of the alarms.

The only way this could happen is that if you had a window or door open so that the channels could enter the apartment or if you have a leak elsewhere which is very bad to let it in.

I would call the building manager and have them check it just in case, because it's something you do not want to pass unnoticed.

It was the truck.
