Pipe Heating Cable

Posted on October 7, 2010.
Pipe Heating CableIs it acceptable to keep the submerged pipe heating cables in the watera

I plan to build an irrigation system for my pets that live outside, and it is a source of water (like a large bucket) and a PVC pipe to reach the animals. I have to keep water from freezing in winter, and I thought using heating cables. However, most of these cables are designed to be wrapped around the pipe, which is not desirable for my purposes.

I wanted to know if I could run the cables instead of heating the hoses and let all that is extra coiled inside the bucket to keep the whole system against freezing. Is this OK or would it cause problems of electrical terriblea

Farm and ranch supply stores sell heated for exactly that purpose. Use one of these, NO tape pipe. The casing pipe is not intended to be used in deep water, and it can be chewed by animals.

I use a couple of old bathtubs placed next to the pins from freezing with storage tank heaters to keep water from freezing. Drain and refill the tanks every two days to keep the fresh water supply and livestock are very happy.

Jump to Atwood, Tractor Supply, Race Brothers, or any AC supply agricultural and livestock and tell them what to do. They will set up in minutes. TFTP. Flag

Please do not do that! Yes, you and only you will be responsible for the creation of a "terrible shock condition.
1) UL approval on the strip heat is to use "around" pipe. Not "in".
2) The insulation of the strip heat is not intended to be immersed in water.
3) When this isolation begins to decompose, the water will become electrified. When your pet, standing on the ground (wet) they reach drinking and when they come into contact with the electrified water, they will be electrocuted.
Your pet is not worth spending moneya

No do not! if you can find a way out of pond or fountain store they must have something

Why not wrap around them outside the dumpster ... or get a water heater dedicated as those for fish tanks:)

Your best bet would be to go to a farm supply store or pet supply company and buy a heater built for this purpose. The cable from the tank is made for aquariums, but they do not freeze up like a bucket or outside the reservoir would so she can hold under outdoor weather / conditions. Heater / defrosters are not that expensive (usually $ 20 - $ 50 with the ones I bought.) In some stores I've seen heated buckets for sale at about $ 25 or more. The heating unit is concealed in the walls of the bucket and nothing comes in contact with water. As regards the system of PVC piping, you will need for the engineer so that the drain pipes clear of the water when not in use. (Assuming you do not bury in the soil below the "frost line" in your area.)
